TESSA November 17th 2012 Outing

This year the society reinstated the annual outing after a year’s break – and on Saturday 17th November at 10.00am a group of TESSA members & guests met at Lambert Vorster’s farm ‘Wyngaardt’ to view his collections of interesting & unusual items.

Thanks to Lambert for  telling us something  about his collections, especially his collection of Ancient Egyptian artefacts, many of which are genuine and from the collection of English Egyptologist Guy Brunton [1878-1948]- they’d been acquired at an auction held at the bankrupt Prynnsberg estate [near Clocolan] in 1996. He said Guy Brunton had been married to Winifred Newberry Brunton [1880-1959]daughter of the then owner of Prynnsberg, Charles Newberry; Winifred is herself well known for her portraits of AE rulers.

After opportunities to view and in some cases, examine more closely, the many & varied items displayed, we  left ‘Wyngaardt’ and its treasures and to travelled to nearby Malmesbury for lunch at ‘The Manor’ restaurant- Lambert accepted our invitation to join us. A wine-tasting was held before lunch where the qualities of the various red and white wines were enthusiatically explained to us by Quintus from Cloof wine estates.

Lunch was was most enjoyable and real ‘boerekos’ -  a chicken potjie with rice and sweet potatoes was followed by ice cream & chocolate sauce! For those who wanted something else, tea or coffee was served by the attentive waitresses.

A wonderful day was enjoyed by all, thanks to ‘The Manor’ and to Lambert for having us and for his patience and enthusiasm in answering all the questions directed at him. Thanks to John for the photography and to Anthony who made all the arrangements but wasn’t able to attend himself.
